Greerton roundabout to go

The Niederer roundabout at the intersection of Fraser Street and Chadwick Road is set to be replaced by traffic lights in the near future.

A petition to be received by Tauranga City Council at today's meeting seeks a ‘safe zone' for pedestrians crossing Fraser Street, near the Chadwick Road intersection.

Traffic lights could replace the roundabout at the intersection of Chadwick and Fraser sooner than anticipated.

The roundabout is currently planned to be replaced by traffic lights in six years' time in 2020/21, but a council report on the petition says the request for a safer crossing is a 'priority”.

And because it's considered a priority, the report recommends adding the crossing to the Minor Safety Works Programme for 2014/2015.

It's an acknowledgement of the increasing traffic volumes along Fraser Street, predicted to continue in the next few years.

It is also a concern for pedestrian safety as the peak hour queues forming along both roads, mean more people cross between queued and slow moving vehicles.

Petitioners say the roundabout is crossed frequently by mothers with children and elderly living in surrounding streets, and are seeking a pedestrian refuge within the island, or a light-controlled crossing.

The Niederer roundabout was constructed in 1989 to address safety concerns in the area at that time. It's named after Eric Niederer, a Tauranga City Councillor from 1968-71, and former chairman of the WBOP Road Safety Council.

Eric was a long-term resident of the area and donated $20,000 towards the roundabout project to improve the safety of the road.

Local residents agreed to name the new roundabout after Eric to acknowledge his commitment to road safety.

I understand that there are still descendants of this man living here in Tauranga-Will the council do them the courtesy of contacting them about this??

Never seen a need for lights at this intersection, which I use regularly

I agree. I use this roundabout often and for pedestrians at peak hours it is impossible to cross. Lets do it before there is a real nasty accident I say,

Traffic lights...

Are a while off, 5-7 years away, and then subject to budget constraints

Another council scheme to waste more money. Leave it as it is

The TCC staff advised that the installation of lights at this intersection is planned for 2020/2021. This of course will depend on traffic usage closer to the date.

Can see traffic lights causing a huge back up of traffic on both Chadwick and Oropi Rd at peak hours. Its already bad enough with a free flowing roundabout. Why not just put a pedestrian crossing 50-100m up Chadwick rd? Saves ALOT of money

Hmm.

What a shame that they're going to take the roundabout away. Was lovely to see my family name put somewhere for all to see . Once the roundabout is gone, the meaning is gone too.

It can be busy during peak times. I'd think the approaches to the interestion would have to be altered. My worry is the council may decide that it's time to put parking meters in Greerton to "cover the cost" of the planned lights. Which we definitely don't want.Don't say they wouldn't as money is always an issue. If it goes ahead then the intersection could be known as Niederer corner. What do you think?

Really!!

Personally I would have thought other roundabouts in the city would be better with having lights controlled, ie Pyes Pa intersection and waihi rd connecting to otumoetai rd, we have used the no idea roundabout (as we have called it for years) and have found it to never be a problem for us, cmon council get with it!!

Waste of Money.

I use this intersection several times a day from different directions. apart from a 5 pm slow down there is not a traffic issue. That pedestrians need a safe place to cross may well be but they could walk down the street a bit further to a crossing rather than inflict these lights on us. The intersection that does need lights is at Cameron Rd, Maleme St. since these clowns fixed that intersection its more dangerous than ever. There is now an almost constant stream of traffic from Greerton to Pyes Pa and getting across the intersection to go to Greerton is death defying. From the right lane their is no view of the traffic down from the roundabout once a truck or bigger vehicle gets into the Pyes Pa lane. These designers must have eyes that are painted on when it comes to seeing the effects of their work.

stop looking at other things to destroy work is urgently needed at Totara st lights at Maui/Waimarie failing when there is no cross traffic (been going on for weeks yet there was a post on here about a tough job yeah right sitting on ya butt) causing backlogs on Totara st just for the odd truck or van, now when this was implemented some 10yrs + i think they said the port wants access but now look at the back log its causing POT made what 75million and what is it costing the rest of the district in lost time and extra fuel, if you want people to praise this council they need to face the real issues

More lights?

Food goodness sake, Tauranga is turning into Auckland with traffic lights on every other corner. Please consider removing some of the now-redundant lights around the place, like 17th Ave and 13th Ave on Cameron Road. It's ridiculous seeing so much traffic stationery so often.

wrong one

I would have thought Cameron rd & Chadwick Rd roundabout more important for traffic lights. It is a busy intersection and people just dont use the lanes properly when coming out of chadwick rd.

More urgent roding needs in Tauranga!!

This is a ludicrous idea, there are so so many other intersections in Tauranga/Mount area that warrant traffic lights on so much more urgent basis than this intersection! including the intersection up the road, Cameron Road & Chadwick Road - this has far greater need and I don't live in the Mount, but Girven Road & Maunganui Road intersection is way past being urgent - no more money should go into roading in the Tauranga/Mount area until this disaster of an intersection is dealt with - every spare penny should be thrown it's way, not splurged on unnecessary projects
