Police warn of illegal skids

Police are warning young motorists taking part in illegal 'skids” on Bay of Plenty roads and uploading footage onto social media they face a fine of up to $4500 and three months' jail if caught.

Police are warning against illegal skids.

This comes after a Facebook page encouraging people to send in photos and videos of skids and burnouts being performed on Bay roads was created last month – receiving more than 1000 likes already.

So far six videos have been posted including a convoy of boy racers near the Gull service station on Hewletts Road and the first skid for a 'new illegal skidder” on a rural road.

A post from the administrator of the page advises motorists to 'make sure the number plate is covered up so there are no cops on your tail”.

'Let's see whose best!! Give a like you hoons,” says the administrator.

Bay of Plenty acting road policing manager Inspector Mike Wright says it is extremely disappointing some people are choosing to share information about illegal and unsafe driving behaviour across social media for 'entertainment” purposes.

If caught penalties for charges including; sustained loss of traction, racing and unnecessary exhibition of speed and acceleration, both carry a maximum fine of $4500, three months imprisonment and a mandatory disqualification from driving for a minimum of six months.

'Encouraging this dangerous activity and total disregard for safety is irresponsible,” says Mike.

'We will continue to be relentless in both our enforcement and education as these are exactly the sort of people who should not be on our roads, as they are putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk.”

Mike says police experience first-hand the trauma that can be caused by unsafe driving with too many people, particularly young people, dying or suffering serious injury on New Zealand roads.

Legal

How about finding someplace that this could be done LEGALLY, perhaps a small fee to enter the grounds etc, all it needs is an empty slab of concrete maybe some old tyres as a barrier around the outside. They are going to do skids anyway so how about put it somewhere that can be monitored where the public aren't going to accidentally get hurt.

confiscate the car

whats wrong with immediate confiscation of the car?Im sure that will put a stop to skidding and etc.Time to stop pussy footing around.

It says alot about the state of law and order in this country when Police keep issuing empty threats through the media. 3 months jail and a $4500 fine! - yeah right. Hoons know it and we know it. You're fooling nobody.

think from there position

why 3 months jail time , their just gona get angry more when their out and want to do more skids , give us a burnout pad or something like that so we dont get in trouble , im still gona do skids , it wont stop me from doing it , its one of my hobbies , rather do skids and waste rubber than kick a ball around , or do sumthing dumb , my words said , and aswell for many others ,like the 1000 people that liked that page .

Improve public relations

Jimmy, same old request, a free place to skid, free monitoring, etc, WON'T HAPPEN! The point is if LEGALITY is the issue, then form a club, create responsibility, fill out an Environmental Impact Report, do an OSH submission, arrange St Johns and fire attendance, pay insurance levies, collect funds to support the activity just like everybody else does through raffles and donations; and just see how hard it is to set up a boring LEGAL activity. The whole attraction with doing skids in random locations is that it is ILLEGAL! And therein is the fun/buzz factor with Crusher Collins enforcers just around the next corner. Exciting stuff!

Hey Legal!

If you & your mates want to "LEGALLY" do skids, get together and organize it yourselves!(Pro-Am can manage to do it). Don't sit around EXPECTING/waiting for the police or council to create a venue & event for you. Its simply not their responsibility. Skid at your own risk. You're aware of the penalties, so don't cry fowl when busted.

Y not Hoons

Pay for and make their OWN Concrete Slab??, and 200meter track, and make ur friends PAY to come and watch u do Burnouts?? surely some Petrol head has some land somewhere? Instead of disturbing people in suburbs u dont even live in, and ripping up the road.

If you want a concrete slab for burn outs

Put some of that money aside that you spend on tyres, petrol and modifications and arrange for one to built. Don't b1tch and moan when you can solve your own problem, and avoid getting ticketed. It's easier to whinge though, isn't it?

Where

Posted on 26-06-2014 11:17 | By Jimmy

did i say anything comes for free? and who said that i have anything to do with said skids? Did i say it had to be in a PUBLIC area. No, how about you stop jumping to conclusions and debate it properly. Yes i lost my licence on the grounds of "sustained loss of traction" however the circumstances surrounding it make it no way a "purposeful" or "pre-meditated" "skid".... All for privately raising money to sort somewhere, as like everyones said, it's going to happen anyway, you can't stop it, so why not work make it safer for the public. The people doing it arent out there to HURT anyone, rather are doing what they find "fun" and "stress-releiving". Not everyone finds reading a book, or going fishing a good option to releive stress.

Misguided...

The administrator of the facebook site has a very misguided and warped view of 'rights”...maybe it will change if someone is seriously injured or killed.

Maybe?

Posted on 30-06-2014 01:14 | By GreertonBoy

Maybe, since the hoons are obviously determined to smoke their tyres off the rim, perhaps when caught, the police can take the car and owner to an official safe sight and the hoon can watch one of the police officers smoke the tyres of the hoons car until the rims wear down or the motor explodes (or both) that way the hoon driver gets to see what a great burn out his car could do, then he can save up for some new tyres, motor or whole car. Might be more careful with the next one, if caught again, same thing.... I reckon by car 3 they might start to be more sensible?

Global Warmers too!

Posted on 30-06-2014 15:14 | By Watchdog

All those pollutants hitting the atmosphere are ending up adding to global warming. Go sit in Beijing and see what you will create if you do enough of it. Can't see further than 30 meters. I love the idea of your car being confiscated. Three strikes and it could get crushed as well. Grow up and drive responsibly on the roads.

DUMB

its one of my hobbies , rather do skids and waste rubber than kick a ball around , or do sumthing dumb - - - YOU are doing SOMETHING DUMB! Any Half Wit can slide a car and burn rubber - Having the ability to control your car without skidding or burning rubber is the clincher That's where the skill is !! Having a driving license is not a right, it's an entitlement - Drive like a Twat - Lose the license. Leave the roads clear for the grown ups!!
