New Trustpower site blessed

Trustpower's new site on Durham St has been blessed by representatives from Ngai Tamarawaho this morning in what is another step forward for the power company's move to the CBD.

Headed by kaumatua Tamati Tata, a group of 35 people representing Trustpower and building partners gathered at the edge of a gaping dirt hole, with diggers inside, to bless the site.

The site blessing signals the beginning of construction of Trustpower's new three-storey development, which will be its new head office, and is expected to house up to 450 staff.

Trustpower confirmed its move to the CBD in March, with the company expected to make its move from the current Truman Rd site about February 2016.

In a statement to SunLive in March, Trustpower community relations manager Graeme Purches says the building will accommodate existing staff at Trustpower's head office in Truman Lane and staff at the Westpac building in Devonport Rd.

It will also allow for anticipated growth as New Zealand's fifth largest electricity retailer expands.

The new building will consist of three floors and a basement, which will be below ground level in Durham St and at ground level at the rear.

Graeme says the building will be manned 24/7 by customer service staff and technical staff remotely managing and monitoring Trustpower's 38 New Zealand hydro schemes, two New Zealand wind farms, and the company's Australian wind farm development, via satellite.

He says given the nature of the Trustpower business, it will also house standby generators and a host of IT infrastructure including the dedicated equipment needed to supply Trustpower's growing number of telecommunications customers.

The building will be owned by the developers, and leased long-term to Trustpower which will occupy about 90 per cent, with two or three other smaller tenants occupying the remaining 10 per cent.
