Club sees red in final fixture

Whakarewarewa Rugby Club is dismayed the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union continues opting for a neutral finals venue in what they believe is rightfully theirs to host this Saturday.

In its first finals appearance since 2011 the Rotorua side beat Tauranga Sports 18-17 in last week's semifinals, booking its spot in the finale against Mount Maunganui at 2.45pm.

Mount Maunganui and Whakarewarewa during a clash earlier this season at Blake Park.

But club members are outraged the ruling prevents them home advantage even after finishing the regular season above Mount Maunganui – finishing third and the Mount fourth.

Instead the final will be played at Tauranga Domain, as part of the Bayfair Baywide Club Rugby Finals Day, with development final between Tauranga Sports and Greerton Marist beforehand at 12.45pm.

The 2013 finals day was held at Baypark with the Mount falling to Tauranga Sports.

Whakarewarewa coach Ngarimu Simpkins is disappointed the final will not be in Rotorua and feels the ruling hampers what could have been a strong and vocal contingent of red and black supporters.

The finals venue is based on each finalist being given points and the sub-region with the most points getting to host both finals.

In this case the three Western Bay teams Mount, Tauranga and Greerton trump the sole Central Bay side Whakarewarewa.

Simpkins says with a minority of Central Bay teams compared to the Western Bay the odds of ever hosting a final under current rulings are slim.

'There are six teams from the Western Bay and only two from the Central Bay so it doesn't really add up in terms of those rules,” says Simpkins.

'It's something that needs to be looked at and hopefully they can change those rules in the coming years,” says Simpkins.

But he says the choice of venue is not going to get in the way of the team's recognition and hype of being involved in finals week.

'We are just excited. It doesn't really matter where we play but it would have been lovely to play in front of our home people.

'There is an opportunity to play in a final but we are certainly leaving all the politics aside and preparing to play with a lot of passion and a lot of mana.”

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union rugby operations manager Neil Alton says the system in place to determine what region hosts the finals has been in place for a very long time.

He explains plans to host the finals day at Baypark once again were prevented after venue management informed the rugby union the field would not be ready in time.

'We were informed by Baypark management a month or so ago that Baypark wouldn't be available because of the re-sowing of the field. Hence playing at a neutral venue Tauranga Domain, which is also the home of Western Bay of Plenty rugby,” says Alton.

The current finals ruling will be reviewed at the end of the season between the rugby union and clubs at the end of the season.

'Anything we do is to benefit the membership of the clubs and so we will be going through the review process in August and considering any changes for next year.”

I fully tautoko this, the club has worked hard to get to the finals the these men dam well deserve a FINALS home game! But with this system in place you might as well say where never going to get a home final unless more teams join the round from the central. Whaka Hi! Whaka Ha!
