Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says the fire was originally 1.5 to 2 hectares in size.

'It's not spreading particularly fast.”

Scott says Principal Rural Fire Officer Barry Low is at the scene and he has called for a helicopter to help battle the blaze.

A water tanker from Te Puke is also at the scene.

Scott is unsure how long it will take firefighters to put the fire out.
