Elderly man dies in SH2 crash

An elderly Tauranga man is dead and his 72-year-old female passenger is in Tauranga Hospital after police say a van crossed the centreline crashing into two cars on State Highway 2.

Two other people – a 34-year-old Papamoa woman and an 11-year-old boy –in a third car travelling from Tauranga to Katikati were also injured.

A man has died and three others are in hospital after a crash on State Highway 2.

The woman suffered minor injuries and the Papamoa boy had moderate injuries, says a St John Ambulance spokesperson.

Both were transported to Tauranga Hospital where they are currently in a stable condition.

The 72-year-old Tauranga woman is also in a stable condition.

Western BOP road policing manager senior sergeant Ian Campion says a 61-year-old female driver of a van travelling from Katikati to Tauranga crossed the centreline and struck two oncoming vehicles.

The driver of the van and 65-year-old male passenger suffered minor injuries, says Ian.

The accident happened on a bend about 300 metres north of Apata Station Road just after midday.

A section of SH2 between Omokoroa and Katikati was closed for four hours following the collision, causing traffic delays either side.

The serious crash unit attended the scene and undertook a crime scene examination.

'Any witnesses to that crash who haven't yet been spoken to by police can phone the Tauranga station and ask for myself or senior constable Aaron Williams,” says Ian.

Diversions were put in place via Wainui South Road and Esdaile Road, adding 10-15km to the journey.

To the victim and all those effected by this, let it be a reminder to all to "drive to the conditions' be that road or weather conditions, concentrate on the task at hand (driving) and expect the unexpected!
