Scrap metal raises money for children

A Tauranga company is holding its first scrap metal donation open day as it looks to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

MetalCo in Aerodrome Road opened its facility from 9am until 12pm to give people the chance of drop off any unwanted metals.

Non-ferrous metals supervisor Andrew Bryant says the day has been good.

'We've had about 10 trailer loads come in with steel, copper, brass, aluminium, stainless steel, all sorts of bits and pieces really.

'We've had someone bring in some good BMX bikes, possum traps, hot water cylinders and an old trailer.”

Andrew says they have a bin all year round dedicated to raising money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

'People donate scrap metal and we weigh it up every month.

'It must be a couple of years ago we started collected for the foundation but this is the first open day we have had.”

MetalCo sent out flyers to all their customers ahead of today's open day.

Andrew says they had a lot of donation before today and a lot of people came in yesterday to make a donation.

'We had a man come in before who had dug through his attic and found some old copper and it seems to be more of the older generation coming in and donating.

'We hope to be able to do more and more of these as the Child Cancer Foundation is a good cause to help out.”

Andrew says as soon as you tell people where the money is going they are more than happy to donate.
