National announces party list

National candidates for Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty electorates are ranked 18 and 59 on the party's list.

National candidate for Tauranga Simon Bridges and Bay of Plenty candidate Todd Muller.

The National Party announced its final list for this year's election on September 20 today.

Party candidate for Tauranga Simon Bridges has claimed a high ranking spot of 18, while BOP candidate and newcomer Todd Muller is sitting at 59 on the list made up of 75 spots.

Current Tauranga MP Simon first won the seat in the 2008 general election following the retirement of previous National MP Bob Clarkson. Simon retained the seat in 2011.

Former Fonterra executive Todd Muller is one of a number of new MP's to the list.

Rotorua candidate Todd McClay has also claimed a spot on the party list, sitting at number 23.

The National Party has a current total of 59 seats in Parliament which consist of 42 electorates and 17 list seats gained when the party polled 47.31 per cent of the party vote.

Party president Peter Goodfellow says the list for the 2014 election brings together a strong mix of both experienced political leaders and fresh new talent.

"Our 2014 list shows the benefit of our ongoing rejuvenation programme. If National was able to match its election result from 2011, we would bring in as many as 13 new MPs, alongside 46 returning MPs.

"With the depth of talent we have to choose from, settling on a list that balances new blood alongside valuable experience was not an easy task.

'However, we believe we've struck the right mix that will allow for renewal and continued stability in a third term."
