Matua car surfing 'stupid'

Video footage of a man 'car surfing” on a moving vehicle through the streets of Matua is being called 'stupid and reckless” by Tauranga Police.

The footage, posted on You Tube on Sunday entitled 'Car Surfing in Tauranga', was taken by a passenger in the vehicle immediately behind the Cortina and lasts for nearly two minutes.

Footage of the surfer on the back of the car travelling along Levers Road.

Since it was uploaded it has been viewed 82 times.

The footage begins showing the car driving along Otumoetai Road before going through the Ngatai Road roundabout and on to Levers Road.

The driver of the car following says the vehicle is travelling at 60km/h in a 50km/h zone while the 'surfer” balances on the rear of the car. In one instance the man is seen removing his hands from the vehicle and balancing on the boot.

The vehicle travels along Levers Road before turning into Woods Avenue where the filming stops.

Western Bay of Plenty Police, Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair, says it is extremely disappointing to see such behaviour on Bay of Plenty roads.

'I would describe it as pretty stupid and dangerous behaviour,” says Karl.

'Also it distracts other motorists and has the potential for an accident.”

Police are today beginning an investigation and are appealing for the driver and the person on the back of the car to come forward. Charges are more than likely to be laid, says Karl.

'It could be potentially dangerous or reckless driving, depending on the circumstances. Once we have a good look at the investigation they could well be facing prosecution.”

The person filming the footage is also asked to contact police, something they should have immediately done, rather than uploading it to social media, says Karl.

'Call *555 immediately and we may have had a car in the area and been able to pull that car over.”

When contacted by SunLive the person who filmed the footage did not want to comment.

I have never had much joy with *555. I also fill in online report bad driving forms and never hear back.

It's a bit rich for the police to say 'ring them first' at least Sun media publicised the stupidity. I also caught some pretty dangerous stuff on my screen camera a few months ago which could very easilly led to several deaths, and as soon as I got home I phoned the police - Strangely I got put through to an office in another city- the instruction was to drop the video down to the Tauranga police station and they would contact me once they had investigated - this was several months ago and I have not heard a word - one gets the feeling that they could not be bothered- so perhaps I should send it to Sun media - I am sure that would get some action!

Not quite sure what your problem is Rastus. How do you know that the police did not investigate your video? Is it really any of your business what action was taken? Let the police do their job, if they had to follow up and replay every investigation to the public wouldn't that be considered time wasting?Or is the real problem the fact that you did not get a 'Well done" or high five for being a citizen with common sense?
