Pair charged after 'car surfing'

Two people have handed themselves in to Tauranga police today after video footage of a 'car surfing” incident police say was 'stupid and reckless” went online.

SunLive this morning published footage of a man 'car surfing” on the back of a Cortina through the streets of Matua that was uploaded to You Tube on Sunday.

Footage of the car turning onto Levers Road in Matua.

Tauranga Police said two 24-year-old Tauranga men came forward this morning and were charged this afternoon.

One is charged with dangerous driving and the other with being a party to dangerous driving.

Both will appear in Tauranga District Court on Friday, August 1.

Police called for help identifying the car surfer soon after the video was posted.

"Bay of Plenty Police is extremely disappointed to see an example of such stupid and dangerous behaviour,” says area prevention manager inspector Karl Wright-St Clair.

'In addition to the obvious lack of regard for personal safety, such thoughtlessness creates a significant hazard for other innocent motorists.

'We encourage anyone who witnesses this type of activity to contact Police immediately. While instances of "car surfing" are not common, there is no place for this type of mindless behaviour on our roads.”

Anyone else with information about this incident, who witnessed and filmed this incident, is asked to contact Tauranga Police.
