Detailed look at Mount flyover

Motorists can now closely examine what will be the new $102million Baypark to Bayfair link upgrade and flyover.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has released the two minute long animated look at the roading project announced last month.

Girven Road flyover perspective.

The project will see one flyover take State Highway 2 traffic over the Girven Road roundabout intersection, while a second will route traffic from SH29 over the railway line and Te Maunga intersection at Baypark.

Expected to begin in early 2016, it will reshape State Highway 2 between Baypark and Bayfair to reduce congestion and alleviate traffic congestion.

The existing railway line will be re-routed to behind Owens Place and its shopping centre and through part of the Omanu Golf Course.

Surrounding businesses have come out in support of the project following its announcement.

Big spenders

A lot of coin going into this lot, seems very expensive for what it is.

Brilliant!!!

About time. Now tauranga needs an international airport and poeple will come.

What traffic controls are there

under the Girven Rd overpass?I cant see traffic signals in the image. There are multiple lanes in multiple directions once more competing for right of way. Like it used to be 25 years ago, but bigger, messier and darker under the roadway.

Left into SH29 via Lights?

The project looks great. But it does funnel everyone to stay on SH2. I think it should be a free turn onto SH29 heading to Maungatapu. Not a light controlled left turn.

pedestrians?????

for goodness sake why dont they leave the underpass otherwise how are pedestrians going to get to Owens place or to their homes in Bayfair Estate without holding traffic up

Big thumbs up to this project for sure. From someone who used to drive the piece of road as a daily commute. Y

No doubt it is expensive but what are the alternatives? Lots of queues and congestion? Cars get cheaper and roads more expensive so it is a problem that keeps getting worse. We could do what the arabs do and import lots of very cheap labour from India and Bangladesh but I don't think that would go down very well in insular New Zealand. So suck it up and get your cheque book out.

the Temunga part might be flawed as from Tepuke left to Maungatapu needs to be a free run slip lane i dont understand why it has to have 2 sections and same for Maungatapu to Bayfair it has 2 pinch points when it should have a slip lane 2

pedestrian crossing

At the meeting held recently I asked the question about pedestrians crossing from Bayfair to Owens place...the answer is lights will installed at the Girven Rd roundabout..I will not drive my car over to Owens Place as I just hate the roundabout as it is now but it will be much safer with the controlled lights.

Not quite right

The flyover section should be dual carriageway at least, with 2 lanes in each direction, also the SH29 raised interchange should be an elevated roundabout and not a bridge with traffic lights. Much easier to transition from one to the other. Just an opinion.

The flyover section over Girven Road should be 2 lanes in either direction and the interchange of SH 29 and SH2 should be an elevated roundabout to allow ease of transition, rather than traffic lights and a bridge. Most other countries would do that. Oh, and tish, if you watch the fly by on YouTube, you can see the traffic lights at Girven Road underpass.

Interesting

I noticed that you cant come past Baypark, turn left towards Bayfair and get onto the flyover. So if you live in Mt, you are forced to go through lights. Love to see how many people do the quickie across all the lanes to solve that one!!!!!!!!!!!
