Woman attacked by dog

A woman has been attacked by a dog while walking home to her Tauranga City apartment this morning.

Tauranga acting Sergeant Matt Elliott says the woman was returning to the Monmouth Apartments at Cliff Road and Park Street after taking her dog for a walk when she was attacked just before 10.30am.

A woman was bitten on the hand by a dog while walking to her Tauranga City home.

Matt says a brown dog, believed to be a pitbull, has attacked the woman's dog and when she intervened she was bitten on the hand.

'It seems like a dog that's followed her home has attacked her and she's received some injuries.”

The woman suffered a 'large gash” to her left hand as a result of the dog bite. She was attending to the gash and being comforted by another woman until St John Ambulance could arrive.

Police now have the dog and animal control has been called to remove it, says Matt.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, says she heard two dogs fighting.

'All I heard was dogs fighting. We just try to keep to ourselves but I came out to see what all of the racket was about.”

Your fault, pitbull owners.

Yet another attack by a pitbull. Just wait for the 'poeple' to come out of the woodwork justifying this attack as the fault of bad owners and that labradors bite more. Yet, pitbulls will continue to maim and kill people.

What a surprise...

...another Pitbull attack, of coarse this will be blamed on the owner AGAIN.. when will we learn (like other countries have)that this nasty breed needs to be banned?

this is why I don't like walking thru the streets in Tauranga. you would think you would be safe especially that area........... shame on the dog owners and hope the people concerned are ok.....

my view

I hope the womans dog is okay. I wont take our dog for a walk for because what happened to this poor woman, I'm frightened it will happen to me and our pet. I bet the dog that attacked her isn't registered.

Yet another one.

I was walking a small dog the other day on a lead and one of these X dogs romming free came up to the little dog I was walking, the lady with the X said she's alright and with that the X atacked the little dog. I tryed to seperate them with my foot but they rolled down the sand dunes, so I dived on top of them and was able to seperate them. I did expect the X to atack me but I was very lucky it didn't. I said to the lady with the X, that you told me she was alright, you were wrong, it should have been on a lead, you thought you could control your dog, you couldn't, it should have been on a lead. The X did not have a tag on it. The owner seened to think what happened was OK.

why dont the owners control these vicious animals. Euthanase or desex the lot and that includes any other breed carrying the genes,

Registering

Registering dogs will not make a scrap of difference some still have the ability to attack registered or not. It the owners that should be registered not necessarily the dogs.

If you are not going to ban these wild animals then the consequences of owing an unregistered dog or allowing a dog to roam free should be such that no owner would want to be prosecuted. Gaol sentences would seem to be the only answer - or is that a bit right wing - when it comes to the safety of innocent people then you are right on - I like many others are sick of this ongoing intimidation and feel the time is long past that this problem be taken seriously.

On a lead

Posted on 19-08-2014 08:57 | By Bop man

All dogs should be on lead or tied up at all times big small no matter what. People think just because they have a small dog that they can let it run free and trip people poo everywhere and bite at your ankles. You have no special rights just because you have a small dog.

Simple Solution

Posted on 19-08-2014 09:39 | By The Caveman

Simple solution, ANY dog not on a lead that attacks another dog or a person, gets impounded put down, regardless of being registered or not. ANY dog that is NOT registered and that is found in a public place - on a lead or not - gets impounded and put down. NO ARGUMENTS.

Pitbulls in nz

Posted on 20-08-2014 15:02 | By scotsmob

are just crossbred mongrels, and dogs a aggressive because of lousy owners,a dog like a child is the product of its upbringing... Pitbulls are being made out to be some slathering monster ready to rend and tear at a seconds provocation... totaly incorrect. As a matter of interest you would note the dogin question was NOT under control and no owner in sight... oh yes of course that is the dogs fault too!! Stop listening to media hype and educate and licence owners instead of setting dogs up to face an inevitable unpleasant end

As a foot note

pit bull terriers ARE banned in NZ there are no true purebred lines here anymore only bully type crosses

Very difficult arguement...

I know that certain dogs tend to be more aggressive than others, but any dog can 'snap' and go a bit over the top and get agro. I do actually know a couple of beautiful US pitbulls and they are beautiful dogs, however, deap seated instincts can surface, so all have to be watched. I sort of tend to agree with Cavey, if dogs roam, they should be picked up... big, small, medium, crossbreed... whatever and either rehomed with no further rights of the old owners to reclaim, or euthanasia (the dog, not the owner) This way people WILL start restraining/housing their dogs properly because they WILL lose them permanently, one way or another. Harsh I know, but people must have to be shocked into stopping their dogs from roaming. A tip for protection when walking, carry a small tropical strength insect repellent, stops dogs fighting real quick

REGISTER OWNERS!!!

I agree with some people that owners should be registered. Their properties should be inspected to make sure the dog not only has adequate housing and water, but the property is fenced and a gate appropriate for the type of dog they have. ie: is not able to jump over the fence easily.I have a friend that came off her motorbike in Foxton because of a dog running across the road in front of her. She was taken to hospital as she was knocked out.She is lucky she was not going fast as it could of been worse. She is resting at home now. Her weekend ruined as she was heading to an event.
