Skull found at holiday park

The Historic Places Trust is being called into examine the discovery of a human skull found on a building site at the Papamoa Top 10 Holiday Park today.

Heritage New Zealand lower northern regional archaeologist Rachel Darmody was called to the site about midday after the historical remains were uncovered by contractors at the building site off Papamoa Beach Road.

A skull has reportedly been found at the Papamoa Top 10 Holiday Park building site.

'I haven't looked at it that closely,” Dr Rachel Darmody told SunLive at the holiday park.

'It was more just to see if there was any archaeology that has been uncovered.

A skull is believed to have been uncovered by a drainlayer working at the site of the holiday park's new conference centre and guest lounge expected to open in the spring.

Iwi representatives have been contacted and park management are awaiting their arrival before making a comment.

'The key people is iwi/hapu, and we are currently waiting for them to come.”

Perhaps 900+ years old, pre dates the "Indigenous" population by some 200 years. Be interesting to have these findings confirmed.
