Magic mushroom party disarray

A magic mushroom tea party in Katikati turned sour for three Bay of Plenty men, Tauranga District Court heard this week.

Each of the men suffered dire consequences after consuming the drugged substance in June, with one narrowly escaping a jail sentence on Tuesday.

Christopher Andrew Carey pleaded guilty to two charges of supplying a Class A drug, psilocybin, receiving a stern warning from Judge Thomas Ingram.

Police say 40-45 mushrooms were put into the men's tea which the men, all aged in their early 20s, shared.

Police and ambulance were called to the Kea Street address at 2am, where one man had injured himself while smashing windows, and another had become seriously unwell and was vomiting.

In court Judge Ingram said the maximum sentence on Carey's charges is life imprisonment, but he accepted it was not a commercial transaction.

'It's not a good thing for people to be engaging in because the outcomes can be serious.”

He sentenced Carey to 100 hours' community work and ordered him to pay $200 in reparation for damages.

A sensible sentence

There was no cynical desire to exploit people with drugs for money. Some young guys wanting to experiment without hurting anyone else. Well, they found the results of their experiment and it is unlikely they'll be doing that again any time soon... Reparation and community service are the right options here.
