Plea for missing Maz

A Tauranga woman is concerned her dog's annual spring quest for female companionship has turned sour.

Zoe Silvester says her five-year-old dog Maz usually disappears for a day or two every spring when female dogs near her Apata home are on heat.

Maz – a 30kg mastiff cross sharpei –went missing from Zoe Silvester's Apata home on September 8.

But this time, Maz has been gone for a week and Zoe suspects foul play. She's now offering a reward for the return of the 30kg mastiff cross sharpie.

Zoe last saw Maz on Monday, September 8.

'He just wandered off from his kennel,” says Zoe. 'We don't have to tie him up, he doesn't run away.”

She didn't worry initially, but became concerned when he failed to return as usual.

'He usually wonders off in spring time when the female dogs are on heat. But he's always come home that day.”

She now fears Maz has been stolen, and has set up flyers across the city offering a reward for his return.

She has contacted the SPCA and animal shelters, to no avail.

'I'm going crazy I haven't had any sleep. I've just been searching, driving around.

'There's no other explanation. If he was around, he would be home.”

Zoe refers to Maz as her 'big teddy bear” and says there are many people in the area who will be sad to know he is missing.

'My little boy, who's one-and-a-half, is standing at the door going ‘where's Ma?' – that's what he calls him: Ma.”Maz is microchipped and was last seen wearing a chocker chain with no tag.

Anyone with information can phone Zoe on 0220438544.

Im really sorry for your loss but why is you dog left to wander around? It really shouldn't matter if its the "season" or not, he shouldn't have the opportunity to wander, I really hope he is found I cant even imagine what you must be going through, but maybe next time make sure he cant wonder about, there's some horrible people out there, and its best to keep him safe :)

shouldnt be left to wander

I hope he is fixed and not wandering around making babies

Irresponsible

letting an unfixed male roam around. There are so many unwanted pups without homes as it is. The other times he disappeared for a couple of days should have been enough to make sure he was kept in a secure yard. FYI dogs don't just come on heat in the spring either.

I have to agree with the first comment. Your dog is not supposed to be wandering.I don't care what you think, but he would be still with you if you cared enough to look after him properly.

Maz

Maz should never have been allowed to roam. He should have been desexed ands if he returns or you find him have him desexed and fence your property so he cant roam.

Sorry for your loss, it must be awful. However you said he has wandered for a day or two before. Why take the risk. If and when you get him back make sure he can't get out.

Thanks for everyones negative opinions on the situation.I didnt tell or let my dog wander off to go roaming he has a fenced section and he gets tied up everyday! Iv had him for five years i dont want to get rid of his manhood and I'm not stupid when it comes to the above Comments! This was just so people can help find maz..

Manhood?

He is a dog, not a man! If he's tied up and fenced then you obviously let him out, which is really irresponsible. Maybe he got picked up by someone who will take better care of him, get him neutered and stop him making more unwanted puppies.

Be a Responsible Dog Owner

You state in the article, 'He just wandered off from his kennel", 'We don't have to tie him up, he doesn't run away.” And yet you say he has a fenced section and he gets tied up everyday! There is NO reason to keep his "manhood" unless you are a registered breeder, and you also say he usually wanders off in spring when the female dogs are in heat! So you know this is a problem.

to all u negative people

My decision not to nuet him. We live in the country, he's part of the family so no he doesn't get tied up 24/7. All negative opinions are not helping find maz!

The dog should be neutered and not allowed to roam the streets. Wow we really need to be licensing these irresponsible owners.Hopefully someone has the dog and neuters it.

Precisely

It is a dog, not a man, thus manhood cannot be removed. Are you aware of the area a dog will cover in the quest for a bitch? Back in the 50's, my Dad would regularly take a dog about 3 k's back to it's home after it arrived at our place to moon over our very well secured breeding bitch. There were probably plenty of choices in between our place and his, too. Today, with a much higher dog population of either sex around, the mind boggles at pup numbers a dog is capable of procreating, and the utter unfairness that an owner cannot stand responsible. Responsible owner = dog far less inclined to roam. Get the dog neutered, if you find it. 'Big teddy bear” indeed. We should all be glad it is not.
