Fire tore through the single storey building on August 14, gutting 90 per cent of the house.

The fire reached about 300-400 degrees inside the house – 200 degrees below what is needed to cause a flashover, where every exposed surface inside the house is set alight.

Tauranga and Mount Maunganui firefighters were called to the three bedroom house about 9pm and spent four and half hours putting out the fire and dampening down hot spots.

After investigating the interior of the building, Tauranga Fire Safety risk management officer Bill Rackham confirmed to SunLive the fire was an arson.

'Burn patterns in the floor showed signs the fire was suspicious and I am confident an accelerant had been poured through the bedrooms, trailing into the hallway.”

Bill says the owner of the property had been doing renovations on the weatherboard home but had not visited the property since August 13.

The fire is believed to have been deliberately lit sometime before 9pm on August 14.

Anyone with information about the fire or who saw any suspicious activity is asked to contact Detective Aaron Duggan at Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Burn patterns on the floor have tested positive for an accelerant.
