$12K raised for Diane

More than $12,000 has been raised to help young Tauranga woman Diane Wilson's recovery after she was severely injured in a crash in Australia.

Friends of the Wilson family set up the fundraising page through the Give a Little website with the goal of raising $500.

Diane Wilson is described as a bright and beautiful woman by friends and family.

That goal has been surpassed, with $12,463 raised to cover costs involved with Diane's recovery.

Diane remains in Melbourne's Alfred Hospital since being involved in a T-bone crash on August 31.

The 23-year-old suffered critical injuries including a smashed pelvis, broken neck and brain bleeds.

Diane has since had surgery to repair her pelvis and spinal surgery to reattach her spine to the base of her skull.

Her father Craig Wilson says since her spinal surgery on September 5, doctors have been slowly bringing Diane out of an induced coma.

He says it is a long process and Diane has a long road ahead of her.

'Diane was moved from the Intensive Care Unit to a Neuro ward on Monday. She is sometimes moving the left arm/hand/leg when asked to do so, and on occasions the right-side limbs move in response to pain stimuli.

'She now has the tracheostomy in place instead of tubes in her mouth and is breathing by herself with no help from a ventilator.”

Craig says Diane drifts in and out of sleep.

'It's great that she is no longer under any sedation, just painkillers”.

Diane has already endured a lot in her young life after being born with Crouzon's Syndrome which saw the bones in her face fused.

She has had numerous surgeries to reshape her facial bones.

The Christchurch branch of Turners also raised more than $3200 for Diane at a staff auction last week.
