A man who reportedly doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire yesterday remains in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

The man was flown to the hospital's intensive care unit last night after Police, St John Paramedics and Tauranga Fire Brigade were called to the incident at the Z Service Station on Cameron Road about 3.30pm yesterday.

'He's critical but stable in our ICU,” says the hospital spokeswoman.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are expected to release further information once it becomes available.
