A Waikino man has died after being flung from his car into the path of another vehicle in the Karangahake Gorge.

Police confirm 51-year-old Kelly Graeme Poulter was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff following a two car crash on Pukekauri Road, Waikino about 5pm Saturday.

Pukekauri Rd runs parallel to State Highway 2 in the Karangahake Gorge, between Waihi and Paeroa.

Police, in a statement, say it appears Kelly has been flung into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Police are still investigating the circumstances leading up the incident.

A post mortem is being conducted today.
