Jewellery thief back in jail

The 27-year-old man linked to a burglary of Bethlehem Jewellers in January has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison for a $200,000 jewellery heist in Cambridge.

Haere Tawhiti Rex Maney, from Auckland, was jailed when he appeared in Hamilton District Court this month after earlier admitting charges of receiving jewellery, theft of a vehicle and burglary.

During a police search of his home on April 12, Maney was found to be in possession of a Gold Estate chain valued at $599 and a $1200 custom-made gold and greenstone pendant.

Both items were taken during a burglary of Bethlehem Jewellers in January this year.

In court on July 9, Maney admitted to stealing up to $200,000 worth of items from Cambridge Jewellers hours before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the town on April 12.

At the time of the burglary, Detective Senior Sergeant Shelley Begbie said Maney and an associate broke into jewellers on Victoria St shortly before 4am on Saturday, April 12.

They took a large amount of high end gold jewellery, watches and bracelets including several Pandora charms, rings and necklaces and wedding bands in yellow and white gold as well as platinum.

'Seiko, Citizen and Tissot watches were also taken as well as quantities of pearl necklaces and ear rings,” said police.

A security company was alerted to the burglary when alarms were triggered and passers-by raised the alarm.

As police investigated the matter, a burnt out Mitsubishi Galant car, believed to be linked to the burglary, was found on a rural road at Mangakawa a short time later.

Maney was arrested after his blood was found the scene.

In 2009, Maney was jailed for eight years for his role in the aggravated robbery of Te Puke Jewellers and the Katikati Paper Plus, where a group of four brandished a shotgun and demanded cash, reports Fairfax.

He was out on parole when he committed the Cambridge jewellery robbery.
