Truck wheel hits car

A car has been hit by the wheel of a truck after coming loose and falling off on State Highway 2.

Police were called to the crash on SH2, near Kairua Road, about 3.30pm.

A reporter at the scene says the wheel has come off a three-axle Page Transport truck hitting what appears to be a four door family mover.

It is understood no one has been hurt in the crash and the truck has stopped at the Bruce Road and SH2 intersection.

Tauranga Senior Constable Bruce Gordon says the tyre was only replaced this morning before coming loose and falling off.

Neither the truck nor car are blocking the road.

Rowe motors are in attendance to take the truck away.

Wandering wheel?

most likely that someone forgot to tighten the nuts on the wheel, so it wandered off as soon as spun a few times.

Could have been a lot worse

We are so lucky that you are not reporting on a multiple fatality with this. What a lucky man the driver is!

Tighten your nuts mate.

The mechanic who did this job must feel pretty awful about this. A double check would help.

Really?

How can you blame the mechanic? What if someone had been trying to steal the wheel and removed the wheel nuts? What if there is some sabotage going on? Do you all check your wheel nuts every time you drive? I lost a wheel on my car once, some scumbag had removed 4 of the 5 wheel nut and either got scared off or chickened out, but I found out on the road quite suddenly. To me, the fact that all of the wheel nuts have gone, but the studs are still there, means the nuts have been removed by someone in one go. If they were left loose, they would fall off at different intervals, eventually studs would snap off when enough nuts disappeared. So don't jump on the mechanic, the driver might have changed the wheel, a thief/saboteur may be to blame. Methinks foul play!

Truck Driver?

Way back as an army truck driver we did a 10 point inspection before operating a vehicle. Kicking the tyres were part of it. Lucky escape here and I wonder who would have been charged if it had led to a fatality?

Whoever...

took off all of the wheel nuts would be my guess... Most of us will walk around the truck and pound the tyres to check for flats (if duals) otherwise, most people who drive cars or trucks generally assume that no one has interfered with their wheel nuts. I don't know anyone that checks their vehicle before driving? Will be interesting to hear what accident investigators find.... there is no way every wheel nut vibrated off all at once.... they have been removed on purpose...
