Extra hospital parking planned

An extra 200 car parks will soon be available for patients and visitors at Tauranga Hospital as management look to ease ongoing issues with the hospital's lack of available parking.

Figures released to SunLive under the Official Information Act show there are currently 1047 car parks at the hospital with 379 allocated to staff.

There are 2172 staff working at hospital, more than double the number of car parks.

On top of this the hospital averages more than 500 patients and visitors daily.

About 191,000 people came through its doors as patients in 2013/14 – at 523 a day. In 2012/13 this number was 187,000 – at 512 a day.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board chief executive Phil Cammish says the hospital has committed to leasing an additional 200 car parks off campus to be used by DHB staff.

This will free up 200 of the car parks in the Clarke Street car park currently allocated to staff. They will instead be exclusively for patients and visitors from November 2014.

The total staff count is a headcount, not a full-time equivalent, and includes all staff required to deliver a 24/7, 365 day a year service, including many part time staff, says Phil.

The number excludes staff located in offsite buildings.

Among the public keen to see extra parking is Tauranga mother Katherine Bremmer, who believes people should be cared for and not forced to walk lengthy distances from their car to the hospital doors.

Katherine endured a 'terrible first experience” trying to find a park at the hospital.

Taking her baby in for a specialist appointment, Katherine found herself driving around both the top and bottom carparks for quite some time, in the pouring rain, all the time getting more and more stressed about being late.

'I ended up having to park right down the end of 17th Ave and push my baby in the pram all the way uphill to get to the lift that takes forever to work.

'The baby was crying, I was soaked through, incredibly stressed and so late. These days I have even more children to wrangle so hence leaving loads of time.”

She now adds 30 minutes to any trip to the hospital to allow parking time, but still finds it extremely difficult to secure a valuable car park spot.

'The nature of a hospital carpark is that there are people who are vulnerable, sick and have poor mobility- including the very old and the very young.”

Phil says the public parking availability, compared to the number of staff and public use, is based on Tauranga City Council's operative district scheme.

The scheme requires the Bay of Plenty District Health Board to provide 2.4 car parks per 100m2 of building floor.

In the last four years an extra 150 car parks have been made available at the Clarke Street side of the campus, adjacent to the DHB building, and also at the front of the campus in efforts to make parking more readily available.

The parks are free of charge.

The number of time-limited five minute and 10 minute parks immediately adjacent to the main entrance has also been increased.

Phil says there are both concierge and security staff available to monitor the time limit on the parks by the main entrance and staff are not allowed to park on the top carpark and are towed if identified.

Patients and their families are always welcome to ask for assistance at main reception to help move patients into or out of vehicles or to use a wheelchair to get a patient to a car parked too far away for them to walk to.

Parking

Here's an idea, why not build a multi story car parking building onto of the existing carpark behind the hospital. Close proximity to the main entrance and could protect hospital goers from the wet weather.

How about they at least

QUADRUPLE the number of mobility parks and make sure they are all on the upper level opposite the front doors. It's incredible that injured, sick and disabled people with limited ability and who are probably more likely to need access to their medical providers are still short changed the one thing that gets them to appointments - parking where it's needed. Easier long term parking for ED is needed, too. If people are fully ambulatory there is no need to give them priority parking on the top level, which includes those trendy Parents Parks etc popping up everywhere. One would hope the DHB knew having kids wasn't an obstacle to physical access even though every shopping centre and supermarket thinks it must be.

Ridiculous

Fancy saying help is available to get patients to and fro.... crumbs as if your going to walk from 17th ave to get a wheelchair, then go back again...that's 4 trips in all. 200 extra parks is a joke and I myself have seen staff getting into their cars in the top carpark. Council needs to give consent for the carpark to go UP. Multi-level carpark building, even if people have to pay to park. It has to happen.

I agree with Parking. A multi storey car park would be a brilliant idea. The one at Waikato works well but is not big enough.Pay to park is ok.

That bad?

I have had to spend quite a bit of time at the hospital over the last 18 months and have never found parking to be that much of a problem. I heard a rumour that they always intended to build a multi level carpark down below however the land turned out to be bad fill from an old dump and not suitable without substantial remediation. This does seem to be the most logical solution however.

Yes about time more car parking then possibly wont be enough!!!! Maybe an additional hospital should be built say at Papamoa doing this would relieve the Tauranga hsopital and as the population grows so does the need for another hospital. Not everyone can afford health insurance.

We have been to so many appointments lately and have been lucky but have been approached as we leave by others just milling around for a spot. Many more spots are needed. Hope it doesnt take long.

Why not build a multi-story car park with the heliport and hanger on the top level with the hospital, no need for them to use the lift. Maybe even include St John headquarters and ambo parking at the top as well, all systems working together.... or is this too obvious?

Agree with rogue,, if they had done a Multi story car park to start with as they started the main car park every would have been happy need at lest 5 level's! one level the same level as the top ground were the Hos is for the Parent/aged/wheelchairs so they can just walk off that level shouldn't have to pay!!

Having used the facility many times in the past month, the problem is very obvious - Staff are taking up the lions share of the available spaces. One morning I arrived just after seven and observed the staff filling the place up as they arrived for work - they have to park somewhere so the answer is to have a multi storey carpark and most of us are quite prepred to pay reasonable parking fees to pay for it

In the real world where reality exists the site would have adequate parking made available onsite for usage by staff and the public. The numbers will be well known from the many sites around the place/country/world on the expected traffic flow daily. What we quite simply have here is a complete lack of any consideration of this except belatedly and by using the overflow effect onto Cameron Road. End result is that the amount available is completely inadequate. The parking area that the rear should be 4-5 stories of real car park building, entering at the bottom and multiple exists off back onto 17th Ave, the lights provide good options to get back onto Cameron Road. This would easily accommodate all needed. I would deem this to be a staff car park and the remaining parking up top and around the place to be public parking because its handy.

why on earth isn't there a shuttle bus that runs 24-7 so staff can use it instead of carparks

Take the bus . It stops right outside the door and no issues with parking. See it is simple and cuts down on congestion on roads during peak times.

Pay and Park and Pay

Posted on 01-10-2014 17:43 | By RobED

Please think about pay and park If you have a sick and long term loved one in hospital that you need to visit two or more times a day every day of the week even if it costs 5 dollars a visit times 3 visits a day times 7 days a week = $105.00 a week my wife was in hospital for six months. I could not afford this and keep the kids and house going. Bye the way I had to pay $7.00 to visit.

Good answer, more people including staff especially should be doing just that.
