A Tauranga man who set himself alight on Cameron Road has died in Middlemore Hospital.

Z service station staff and police at the scene on Cameron Road.

Members of the public and staff from the petrol station rushed to the man's aid with containers of water.

The man was taken to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition before being transferred to Middlemore Hospital.

The man spent 10 days in the intensive care unit before passing away on Friday.

Z service station owner Dave Gillies says the man gave no indication of his intention when he bought a container and petrol at the station about 3.30pm.

'He was just a regular customer buying a can of petrol for his lawnmower or something.

'He even said to the casher ‘Have a good afternoon'.”
