Touting for a job

Sacha Williams is short of a job - but she's not short of courage and enterprise.

Each morning the unemployed 28-year-old rises early and heads off down to a busy section of Cameron Road to pitch for a job.

Sacha Williams at one of her regular patches on Cameron Road.

Around her neck is a sandwich board with a plea to motorists who might just be her future boss.

'I need a job” shouts the sandwich board.

The message belies news in Tauranga that there are more jobs on offer – especially in the sectors of trade, healthcare and engineering.

'None of that's for me” says Sacha, who is perhaps her own best advocate in the job market.

'I am hard working and very intelligent and I am looking to upskill”.

Her work history is in cleaning and mussel processing. But Sacha sees herself in the field of cooking or baking.

'I do a very good chocolate éclair and croissant,” she says. 'And I am also good at chocolate brownies and muffins.”

Or perhaps a job as a PA. 'I googled PA,” she adds, 'and it's really only a glorified receptionist. I could do that.”

It's also testament to Sacha's determination and resilience that's she's been confronted by the some of the worst Tauranga has to offer.

'Sometimes I have been ridiculed,” she explains. 'There are creepy people out there who call me a retard. However most people are nice.”

Nice, but no jobs – yet.

Then in a flash her mind is back on the big issue.

'Perhaps I could work in a coffee shop,” she declares.

Later, after three hours touting, Sacha wanders off. She hasn't lost heart. She is relocating to try her luck elsewhere.

Go door knocking. Go to some of the commercial bakery type places in the Industrial areas. Also try the supermarket bakeries.

Glorified PA?

For someone who claims to be intelligent it's interesting that you think it's appropriate to call PAs 'glorified receptionists'. Not only does this insult PAs and receptionists, but it's unlikely to impress those people who would employ them. Also if you really want a job why don't you put some kind of contact details on your sign?

Re-think

Good to be doing something, but there are much better ways of looking for work vs a sandwich board with no details about what you are looking for or how to contact you. You have effectively put down administrators/receptionists/PAs who don't just sit behind desks answering phones but work very hard, not to mention you are distracting main road traffic .. re-think is needed here mate!

I'm sorry but I don't find what she is doing very enduring at all! Straight off the bat she says PA's are just glorified Receptionists - because she 'googled' it. It sounds more like she doesn't have any idea what sort of career path she wants to take - at 28 years old! My question would be - what do you really get out of standing on the side of the road with a sandwich board with no contact details etc - what a waste of time!
