Police warn of Spark scam

Fraudsters claiming to be from Telecom are contacting Spark New Zealand customers, prompting a warning from police.

The scammers are telling customers their Spark services are about to be cut off because of security issues before asking customers to go online to a fake Spark webpage.

Police are warning people of a scam circulating in the Bay of Plenty.

'They are being asked to give remote access to their computer and provide personal banking information as part of this scam,” says a statement from police.

'The calls are not from Spark and we strongly advise anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up immediately. Do not hand over any banking information and do not proceed to the fraudulent webpage.” Police are warning people to protect themselves.

They add: 'Never enter your personal details into a website unless you are sure it is genuine. Check website addresses carefully. If they're similar to a genuine company's URL, but not quite right, be wary.

'Never visit your telephone company's website by clicking on a link - type in the website address yourself.”

People are also advised not to give out account details over the phone unless they made the call and they trust the number called is genuine.

'Ask for a name and number so you can call them back, and check that number against a number you know to be genuine.

'Don't use software on your computer that fills in forms for you. If you have passed on information, contact your bank immediately and report the scam.”
