Name change for BOP council

The BOP regional council has changed its name – for the third time.

The regional council today announced it is adopting the Maori title Toi Moana as its official name to co-exist with its English language name.

Regional Council Chairman Doug Leeder.

Toi is an abbreviated reference to Toi Te Huatahi, or Toi Kairakau - the ancestor that the Bay of Plenty is named for. Moana refers to the ocean on the region's coast and the freshwater rivers and lakes inland. It also means native, indigenous, summit, source, creativity and knowledge.

Toi is already used by a number of Bay of Plenty entities, such as Toi Te Ora, the Public Health Service and Toi EDA, the eastern Bay of Plenty economic development agency.

Regional Council Chairman Doug Leeder says finding a Maori name for the Council has been considered for some time, and gained traction with the new intake of three Maori councillors in October last year.

Further time was required to ensure the name resonated with all iwi across the region.

'It has been important to reach a consensus on a name that everyone could feel comfortable with, and this name was unanimously chosen,” says Doug.

'The Bay of Plenty is also known as Te Moana a Toi, and it's easy to pronounce for those who aren't fluent in Te Reo.

'We hope that people will feel comfortable using either name.”

Bay of Plenty Regional Council was the first council to elect Maori Councillors to represent the Kohi, Okurei and Mauao constituencies in 2001.

Regional councils were originally created by statute as part of the local government changes of 1989.

It started out being named the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, but later changed its name to Environment BOP, which it wore for a few years before changing the name back to BOP Regional Council once more.

Now there will be another renewal of letter heads, business cards and vehicle paint jobs to reflect the new name.

Waste

What a bloody waste of our money. Are they so rich from their share of the Port profits and our rates that they can go and waste money on this frivolous project.

BOP REGIONAL COUNCIL

so, after all that, what do we call it? Toi Moana Regional Council?

Amazing extravagance

Posted on 20-10-2014 15:02 | By Annalist

Maybe not so amazing as it comes from a Council that surely must be cash rich? Yet this Council preaches sustainability and care with resources. For goodness sake choose a name, or even two names and stick with them rather than the three variations we've seen so far. What is the cost of dreaming up the name and changing the "branding"?

Nonsense

Posted on 20-10-2014 15:15 | By mutley

This frequent name changing nonsense is a complete waste of public money and simply indicative of an organisation with more money than it knows what to do with. Would be much better spent solving health, educational and social problems of the children of the very iwi with whom the new name so happily "resonates".

i wonder

Posted on 20-10-2014 16:23 | By earlybird

how much ratepayers money will be wasted on this rebranding - letterheads, vehicles, business cards, etc, etc.

Well done guys!

Posted on 20-10-2014 17:20 | By How about this view!

Now what happens with all of the stationary, business cards, Bus signage, building signage, computer upgrading etc. etc. etc? Oh well, the rates will cover it I suppose! PLEASE don't you lose any sleep over it, the new name is just wonderful......

WHO PAYS

More money wasted on window dressing that fixes no roads,no lakes and no rivers. Why is it that these people have to have monuments to their stupidity.

Waste of money

They have so much of our hard earned money they have to think of stupid ways of spending it. How much are they going to pay the consultants for logo's, printing and marketing.

Unbelievable..!

Not a positive comment so far

Posted on 21-10-2014 08:52 | By nerak

so maybe the name should remain as is, thus saving a truckload of $$. Yes, indeed this idiocy is wasteful, yet another example of the real work not being done, and bureaucracy at it's worst. Now into the fourth name change, how much has all this nonsense cost? Too much. What will name no. 5 be?? Perhaps Tga Kindy for Playing with Someone Else's Money, Learn All The Tricks Here...

Don't worry -

Posted on 21-10-2014 09:06 | By The Caveman

it will keep half a dozen people employed for two years making all the changes and by then another name change will be made - oh! - that will be a job for another couple of years......

Make regional councillors accountable

Posted on 21-10-2014 11:14 | By BullShtAlert

Next election boot them out. Or better still get rid of the Regional Council and just have one council.

How bl..dy stupid can these fools get!

Notice how they don't tell you

Posted on 29-10-2014 17:51 | By Fonzie

Any of this Pc stuff at election time? It all happens after and well before the next elections

@ Fonzie

Posted on 30-10-2014 15:12 | By YOGI BEAR

Agree, not only they don't tell you until well afterwards, they also don't bother asking anyone else's opinion ever either. Of course the obvious reason for that is that they are not remotely interested in anyone else's opinion because they all know what is beest for everyone else.

Brainless decisions!

Posted on 31-10-2014 10:09 | By DAD

Councils don't put these things out to public opinion because they know they will never pass, This decision takes the cake ,it will benefit no-one and cost thousands of dollars.

Great Support

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:39 | By Jitter

I see the Regional Council has overwhelming support for this name change !!! Ha Ha. Once again no public consultation. Who gave the councillors and staff their jobs ? The public of the BOP. If they must have another name it should be multicultural including all the varied major cultures in the BOP, not just one small group. This is another racist, separist decision by these clowns on this council.

dollar dumb

Posted on 02-11-2014 16:53 | By peecee09

Surely the 70 plus million dollars you receive from our 52% shareholding in Port of Tauranga shares should not be squandered on this ridiculous and frivolous exercise. I dare you to canvas your ratepayers on this.

@ Jitter

Posted on 04-11-2014 11:23 | By YOGI BEAR

Agree on that, where and when was there any consultation on this, when did the public get to know about it, obviously after the election and so no fall out for those standing about wasting money.

Can we all understand now?....

Posted on 11-11-2014 22:10 | By groutby

that smiling Mr Leeder does not give a rats proverbial about us or our concerns?..not a word, not even an attempt at a pathetic excuse for this ridiculous outfit called BOP Regional Council...mate, you are lucky to have a local government job, in the "real world", seriously, you would and could not cut it...
