New exhibition a NZ first

A 6m tall oil painting of White Island erupting created by acclaimed artist Euan Macleod is the crown jewel in a new Tauranga Art gallery exhibition.

The exhibition ‘Euan Macleod: The Painter in the Painting' features 50 of his works spanning 1984 to 2014 in the first major survey show held in New Zealand.

Born in Christchurch, but based in Sydney for the past 30 years, Euan has frequently returned home to create and exhibit his art.

His works explore the states of youth and aging, the relationship between the human body and environment, and the process of memory and forgetting.

His mammoth 6m tall oil painting ‘Out of which arising/White Island' that is currently hanging in the art gallery's atrium is by far his largest work to date.

Painted in Waihi during September it took Euan six days and the use of a hydraladder cherry picker to complete the piece.

He also received assistance from exhibition curator and fellow artist Greg O'Brien, whose own work is featuring in the new vault exhibition Whale Years.

‘Out of which arising/White Island' will hang alongside Euan's other works which were inspired by the Bay of Plenty, Lyttelton Harbour, the Southern Alps and Australian images.

‘Euan Macleod: The Painter in the Painting' is being exhibited in the Tauranga Art Gallery until February 22, 2015.

Absolute Nonsense

Posted on 21-10-2014 12:12 | By How about this view!

The use of the terminology "Acclaimed artist" is bandied about with gusto by those within the art world. BUT, acclaimed by whom??? At our Windermere polytech campus we have recently been treated to a Rena grounding themed "Installation" by "An award winning artist whose previous pieces have involved living with a pig inside a container"? Is this the fella doing the acclaiming? Having viewed some of this "artists" work on-line, it is my opinion that he appears to be somewhat formulaic and lacking in the ability to put across his ideas without having to explain them (A real problem with many that see themselves as artists, but then I don't buy into the drivel that many promulgate).
