Police target impaired drivers

Drunk and drugged drivers will be the focus of Western Bay of Plenty Police with the start of Operation Profile tomorrow.

For the last five years, police have launched the operation from the end of October to around January 11, with the aim of getting alcohol or drug impaired drivers off the road.

Operation Profile will run from tomorrow through until January 11.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the booze bus will be out and about and 'drivers can expect to be breath tested anytime, anywhere”.

With the warmer months coming up, people will be preparing for holidays, and much of time alcohol is involved.

The current limit for over-20s is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Anyone under the age of 20 must not consume any alcohol as they have a zero alcohol limit. Youths with an alcohol level of less than 150 micrograms per litre of breath and less than 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood you could be fined and given 50 demerit points.

If your alcohol limit is higher, you could be disqualified from driving, given 50 demerit points and either fined or imprisoned.

With this weekend being Labour Weekend, Ian reminds people there will be a heavy traffic flow on the roads.

He asks people to be patient while driving in the area.

'If you're travelling this weekend, then make it a weekend to remember for the right reasons and not one you would prefer to forget,” says Ian.

'We'd rather not be issuing fines but drivers who do speed can expect to be fined and receive demerit points.”

How do they measure impairment? Being drunk is pretty self explanatory, but drugs are a completely different proposition. Lack of sleep and painkillers are dangerous and legal.

Didn't expect one. But one would be good.
