Drunk drivers busted after crashes

Drink driving is no longer socially acceptable says a Tauranga police officer after two alcohol related crashes in the space of five hours last night.

Western Bay of Plenty Police attended to two crashes, with the first at the intersection of Kennedy Road and State Highway 36 at about 5.45pm.

Two people are facing alcohol related charges after crashing last night.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says a vehicle failed to give way at that intersection and the crash resulted in a van overturning.

'Fortunately, there were no injuries but alcohol was involved in that crash,” says Ian.

'One of the drivers will be appearing in the Tauranga District Court on drink driving related charges.”

The second incident happened on Oceanbeach Road around 9.50pm, when a tourist crashed into a parked vehicle.

Ian explains: 'The driver of that vehicle - a visitor to New Zealand - was processed for drink driving related charges and will appear in Tauranga District Court either tomorrow or next Friday.” There were no injuries sustained in the crash.

Ian says two alcohol related crashes on one day is simply not good enough.

'The numbers of drunk and drugged drivers have declined on Western Bay of Plenty roads in the last four years and obviously we would like that to continue,” he adds.

'Drink driving is no longer socially acceptable - it results in death and serious injuries. I just remind all drivers not to drink and drive and they can expect to be breath tested anytime, anywhere.

'It's just really a no-brainer these days. If you have consumed alcohol don't get behind the wheel.”

Was drunken driving ever socially acceptable? Maybe in the minds of the drunk drivers, but NEVER in anyone elses'. Same with drugged driving. No exceptions.

"Was drunken driving ever socially acceptable?". Yes it was. WAS. Drugs are a completely different issue. Legal, illegal? Prescription drugs can do bad things to your reactions when driving/operating machinery. There's a warning on the label.
