Wait goes on for Mount bar

They say ‘no news is good news', but for the owners of Mount Maunganui bar Vaudeville, ‘no news' is similar to pulling teeth.

For the past five months the Rata Street bar has been attempting to secure a liquor on-licence, but has been hampered by three objections to its application.

Over that time Vaudeville and Pizza Library Co. owner Jessica Payne has attempted to fix the issue via mediation with the objectors – an approach which has failed.

The matter will now be set before a judge at a District Licensing Committee hearing and Jessica was to learn the date last Monday, but has received no information or updates yet.

Her father John Payne says as they wait for information, they have applied for yet another temporary liquor licence this week.

'Our current temporary license runs out on November 2,” he says, 'and that is approaching fast.

'We're waiting for our temporary license to be issued and if that doesn't happen then we have to close our doors while this mess is being sorted out.”

John says they have not received any information from Tauranga City Council regarding their application for their full liquor on-licence.

While he appreciated Vaudeville was not the only case they had to deal with, the lack of information is beginning to take its toll.

'It's just amazing,” adds John. 'We don't really know where we are and it's quite stressful.

'We are building strength by the minute but still living in fear I suppose.”

On behalf of his daughter Jessica and the staff at Vaudeville and the Pizza Library Co., John would like to thank the community for their support.

He says knowing that the community is on their side is absolutely brilliant.

'The support shown to us has been tremendous. All the comments, the signatures on the petition - just everything has been wonderful to receive,” says John.

How can we help?

I took my family there for tea last night - it was FANTASTIC. It would be criminal if three people can close this place down. Surely a petition signed by I imagine several hundred at least should more than outweigh three whingers !!!

The delay is costing

You can bet your last dollar that the process and delays that's costing you is a gravy train for others!

Why dont you guys contact your local Councillors Steve Morris and Clayton Mitchell and ask them to step up and get it sorted for you - one way or the other ?? Cant see why the license isnt renewed- it has been there for a previous business !! As to the residents who are objecting- dont tell me they didnt know about the retailing, the traffic and the other two "pubs" when they purchased their apartments??? Bit like people in Auckland buying around Eden park and complaining about the traffic on Rugby Days !!

Get on to Mayor Crosby

The District Licensing Committee is a committee of Council appointed by the Mayor. Get on to him and CC all elected members! Members are very well remunerated to carry our their roles responsibly and professionally.

Very Frustrating

Cant imagein how hard it must be to be kept on a knife edge like this.We should be doing all we can to support a family business with some vision, flair and creativity which lifts the standards of other (traditional and verging on boring) retailers in The Mount
