Bay of Plenty District Command Centre, Senior Sergeant Courtney Brunt, says the girl was flown in a critical condition, where she later died.

The road was closed for some time allowing paramedics to attend to the girl and clear a suitable landing site for the rescue helicopter.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called due to the serious nature of the girls injuries and the need for quick transportation, says a rescue helicopter spokesperson.

Police enquiries are continuing to establish the cause of the crash.

Later that night, two vehicles collided on SH 30 near Braemar Road with several passengers suffering minor injuries.

Courtney says the passengers were to Whakatane Hospital and traffic was diverted around the scene via Kawerau.

Investigations into each incident are continuing.
