Central Police are getting ready for the annual Palmerston North Blue Light Trolley Derby, with event organisers encouraging families to get involved and register.

The Blue Light charity event on Sunday, November 9, aims to encourage positive relations between police, young people, their families, and the community.

New Zealand Blue Light is a registered charity that runs programmes and activities for young people throughout New Zealand.

It works closely with Police to reduce youth crime and build stronger partnerships between young people, Police and the community.

Inspector Brett Calkin, Manawatü Prevention Manager, says the derby is a great opportunity for kids and the community to get involved in an event in a positive environment free from alcohol, drugs and violence.

'The family friendly event is great for drivers, supporters and spectators.

It gives the community the chance to build a creative trolley and race them in a controlled environment.

'The trolleys range from simple home-made wooden trolleys to professionally built derby racers.

The amount of time and effort that goes into these racers is amazing and it is great to see the effort come together on race day.”

Public and driver safety is paramount and all trolleys will need to pass a safety inspection.

Trolleys must have brakes and mechanical steering is preferred.

All competitors will be required to wear full length clothing including trousers and long sleeves and a minimum of a cycle helmet is required.

Elbow and knee pads are recommended also.

The derby will take place between 10am - 2pm on Cashmere Drive (off Aokautere Drive), on Sunday, November 9.

There is a $10 registration fee for each trolley, and everyone riding must have safety gear.

Registration forms are available from the Palmerston North Police Station.

The Blue Light event is supported by Central District Police and the Youth One Stop Shop (YOSS).
