UPDATE 8pm: Papamoa Hall has been destroyed this evening after a brutal fire ripped through the building.
Police cordoned off part of State Highway 2 and diversions were in place while firefighters tried to get the blaze under control.
The Fire Service were alerted not long after 6pm and a large number of fire trucks were immediately dispatched along with a water tanker.
Fire Service Shift Manager Megan Ruru has confirmed that the fire has been put out and that there was no-one inside the building when it started.
She also states that the cause of the blaze remains a mystery at this stage.
Megan says: 'We got the call at 6:10pm and sent six fire trucks. The hall was well ablaze by the time we got there.
'We don't know what's caused it but we're pretty sure no-one was in the building at the time.
'The fire is out now and we've some released some fire trucks from the scene.”
