Police say the 63-year-old local mechanic was working on his own car at around 8am on Wednesday, and he never showed up for work.

It's believed his wife found him when she returned home from work about 4.30pm.

Omokoroa Fire Brigade chief fire officer Ian Blunt says there was not much firefighters could do when they arrived at the scene.

'We just jacked the car up and pulled him out from under the car,” he says.

Ian says what exactly happened it not yet known and to say anything would be just speculation.

'My children and his children went to school together. It's a terrible thing to happen,” he adds.
