Arrest made in murder case

As the investigation into a Meremere homicide continues into its third week, Waikato Police announce the arrest of a man today but say their work is far from completed.

Waikato Crime Services Co-ordinator, Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall, says a team of detectives are continuing to investigate the death of 49-year-old Michael Patrick Robert BULL who was found dead in suspicious circumstances at a property in the small village of Meremere on 13 October.

"Today members of our inquiry team arrested a 49-year-old Meremere man in relation to three charges of assault on Mr BULL in the months leading up to his death.

"This man has been charged with wounding with intent, assault with a weapon and injuring with intent and he will be appearing in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow in relation to these charges."

Mr Keall says despite the arrest the homicide investigation into who was responsible for Mr BULL'S death was continuing and there was still much work to be done.

"We're still awaiting the results of forensic examinations and other enquiries before we will be in a position to consider charging anyone in relation to the homicide.

"At this time the inquiry team would like to acknowledge all the support we have received from the Meremere community which has been of great assistance to us however we are still after any further information anyone may have in relation to Mr BULL'S death."

Mr Keall said anyone that had information on events at the Meremere property on 13 October who hadn't already spoken to investigators is asked to contact the Operation Trailblazer inquiry team at the Huntly Police Station on 07 8287560.

Alternatively, people unable to speak to Police directly are able to leave information anonymously with the independent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
