Paddling pink at the Mount

Longboards, shortboards or paddleboards - you name it, the Paddle for Pink organisers want to see them and yourself decked from head to toe in pink for this weekend's inaugural pink-inspired surfing fundraiser.

This Sunday from 12-3pm, Mount Maunganui's main beach will take on a tinge of pink as surfers take to the water, followed by a pink beach picnic to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Organiser Naomi Cranston says after a false start on October 20 due to bad weather, they're excited to hold the rearranged event 'come rain or shine”.

The event makes it a 'bit tricky” to estimate how many pink-clad people will turn up, says Naomi.

Despite not having any direct family members affected by breast cancer, the Mount Maunganui resident is a strong supporter of the annual awareness month.

'I guess as a woman, it's always something close to your heart,” she says.

The concept comes from a group of Mount surfers, including Naomi, who are keen to do their bit for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation in the only way they know how – surfing.

Naomi adds: 'We thought it would be really cool to get the surf community involved, because at the Mount everyone paddles some kind of board,”

The Paddle for Pink is weather-dependant. If the surf's up the event will be at main beach, but if conditions are flat there will be a pink-paddle-a-thon around Leisure Island.

'There could be all kinds of crazy pink costumes – I'm looking forward to seeing the boys dressed in pink as well,” adds Naomi.

Entry is via a $5 donation, and all proceeds go to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. For details, call Naomi on: 0273 286 6797.
