KIdnapped baby safe

Hamilton Police investigating the circumstances around the unlawful taking of a baby as it slept in a bedroom of a City home say the baby is now safe and they are working to locate the person responsible.

Detective Sergeant Will Loughrin of the Hamilton CIB says a scene examination is currently underway after Police were called to a Killarney Rd address in Frankton about 1.20pm.

"The caller had gone in to check on an eight-week-old baby which was asleep in a bedroom at the address and when they went into the room they found the baby was gone.

"Understandably upset, the relative has phoned Police and the parents. Initial indications are a woman has entered the home and made off with the baby and our officers are working to establish what, if any link this person may have with the address as we speak."

Mr Loughrin says as officers were beginning to work on how to identify who the person responsible was, a member of the public came into the Hamilton Central Police Station and dropped off a baby.

"This happened about 2.05pm. This person was not the woman who had taken the baby but is known to the alleged offender. Steps were then taken to verify the identity of this baby which has been done and now our focus is on ensuring the baby gets medically examined and returned to its distraught parents.

"While this is going on we are still working to locate the offender and we would ask that anyone on Killarney Rd about the time of the abduction that saw anything suspicious contacts the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200."
