Cockroach causes three car crash

A cockroach running across the dashboard of a vehicle caused a driver to take her eyes off the road before a three-car crash this afternoon.

Police and St John Paramedics were called to the crash on Turret Road after a black Toyota Corolla crossed the centreline and smashed head-on with another vehicle travelling towards Tauranga.

The three-car crash is the second traffic incident on Turret Road in less than 24 hours. Photos: Andrew Campbell.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the woman driving the black car was travelling towards Welcome Bay when she saw an insect run across her dashboard.

The insect caused the woman to look down, and when she has looked up, she found herself on the other side of the road.

'She's been distracted, crossed the centreline and struck two oncoming vehicles,” says Ian.

'The couple in the second vehicle have suffered moderate chest injuries and are described as status three.”

Ian says it's too early in the investigation to know if charges will be laid or not.

Meanwhile, another three car crash is reported to have happened on Cameron Road, outside Harvey Norman this afternoon.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it looked like a minor nose-to-tail crash.

Earlier this morning, Ian issued a plea for drivers to pay attention while they are driving following two nose-to-tail crashes on 15th Ave and Turret Road last night.

So this is great news as the ratings of Turret Rd/15th Ave will increase with all of these accidents happening, so the well overdue, John Key promised widening will have to happen, just a matter of time.

And that officer is the honest truth

If one of my staff told me they had crashed a car because a cockroach distracted them I would have them drug tested.

Driver at Fault

Yogi - It's the driver who is at fault - not the govt. Widening this section of road wouldn't have made any difference if you are on the wrong side - you crash!!

Must remember that one

What a really good story that is, that and many others ... a flea up my nose, I sneezed, there was a seagull ... end result that little story means the lives of others were placed in harms way, wipe out a family or whatever. PS perhaps it would have been a simple thing, perhaps clean the car a little more often?

I agree, I was just taking the positive out of it, that a few more of these will mean that the NZTA will have to stunt the widening up the list a bit, hopefully before hand over to TCC and the bill for $60-70m falls on ratepayers.

.. have been here much longer than Humans and they will be here long after we are gone. Just be glad they haven't demanded indigenous "customary rights"... In another 100 million years it will be cockroaches in 3 piece suits driving their BMWs to the Stock Exchange, with tiny little humans (if we should be so lucky) scuttling to get out of the way... A cockroach can stand 10 times the radiation that would kill a human (ants can take 20x). They are awesome survivors. Nevertheless, I just went and sprayed my car interior after reading this...

What a classic stuff-up

This driver needs to go to Devonport road via an empty Bay Hopper bus, make her way to the Automobile Association at 1st ave and hand in her license in. She should never be allowed to get behind the wheel of any motor vehicle EVER! By the way Elba I like the way you think.
