Papamoa, Mount Maunganui, Greerton and Te Puke fire brigades were called to the blaze just before 5.30pm on Saturday.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Michael Upton says the scrub fire covering large areas on both sides of the road was reported to be initially threatening some nearby property.

Michael says one fire burned about 60m by 10m of vegetation on one side of the road and 60m by 50 on the other.

'Te Puke called for an additional water tanker so obviously they were a bit short for water out there.”

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade station officer Terry Mills believes the fire started from a controlled rubbish burn that became out of control with the wind.

Terry says his crew were at the scene for about two hours battling the blaze.

'A house was in danger for a little while but by the time we got out there it was pretty well covered. 'We left about 9pm.”
