Man injured in rifle blast

A man is in hospital in a stable condition after he accidentally pulled the trigger on his rifle, causing rock to fly up into his face and upper body, while on a hunting trip in the rural valley of Tutaki.

The man, believed to be aged in his 60s, was airlifted by Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department about 9am today.

A rescue helicopter pilot says the man was on a solo hunting trip near Murchison when he accidentally discharged his rifle while negotiating terrain, causing rock to blast up into his face and upper body.

'He was able to make his way to a farmhouse where he raised the alarm regarding his injuries.”

The man was treated on scene by the Helicopter Intensive Care Paramedic for his injuries and flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department for further treatment and assessment in a stable condition.
