Three ties of tennis in Tauranga

Blustery conditions made it very difficult for the Wilson Regional Premier Interclub Tennis players who contested three ties in Tauranga yesterday.

All three ties ended up a draw of three matches each, with Otumoetai beating St Peter's Club (Hamilton) by two sets, Lugton Park (Hamilton) beating Gate Pa by one set – and in the women's competition Tauranga Lawn pipped Gate Pa by six games.

It was an outstanding game between St Peter's Team number one Luke Hamilton and Oliver Petri.

Hamilton, well known for being a slow starter, lost the first set 2/6 but picked up his game in the next two sets to turn the match around. He steadied in the second set and despite the windy conditions found side lines and baselines with accuracy.

Petri wasn't going to let him have it all his own way though and fought hard in the second set to keep control but Hamilton showing calmness unusual in the young was relentless once he had his timing and won the match 26-63-61.

Hamilton teamed up with Jack Guilford who hits a very powerful ball and also picked up the top doubles but again in three sets 46-61 (10-5). These two sets ended up being crucial to Otumoetai with the singles being split 2/2 and the two doubles matches 1/1.

The Lugton Park match against Gate Pa was very tight all the way through. Top player for Gate Pa Jacob Scholes, out of tennis for a couple of years due to a bad injury, showed flashes of his old self but was up against top player Andy van der Vyver, who is back after a year at a university in the States to study at Waikato University instead.

Van der Vyver was comfortable taking his match in two straight sets and with Lugton Park's number two Andy Irving, also a past US University recipient, being too strong for Peter O'Dea taking a win 75-62. With Lugton Park picking up the top doubles and gaining a set in the lower doubles the tie was won.

Whakatane was the only men's team that moved positions on the men's table in the competition when they beat Thames 6/0. This moves them from fifth to fourth position with Rotorua still leading the table.

The Men's and Women's Cambridge teams both played Rotorua and had outstanding results with the men pushing the top of the table team to a count-back of games with the tie concluding with three matches all, even sets and Rotorua winning the match 54 to 51 games.

The women were similar but Cambridge took the match on a count-back of sets with some excellent matches being fought. The Cambridge women' team was the biggest win over the weekend as they were lying in fifth place, while Rotorua is currently in second position.

The significance of this is no change of positions but a concertina of the points table with Cambridge moving up closer to fourth position and Mount Maunganui/Otorohanga moving six points clear of second place that has Tauranga Lawn and Rotorua both on 31 points.

Tauranga Lawn also had a tight match picking up a win against Gate Pa also on a count-back of games.

Points Table:

Men: Rotorua 41,Hamilton 38, Otumoetai 38, Whakatane 33, St Peters 29, Lugton Park 27, Tauranga Lawn 22, Thames 16, Gate Pa 15, Cambridge 13.

Women: Mount Maunganui/Otumoetai 37, Rotorua 31, Tauranga Lawn 31, Gate Pa 26, Cambridge 19, Hamilton 12, St Peters 12
