Woman hit by truck

UPDATE 2.25PM: The woman hit by a truck while on her mobility scooter is being taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

Emergency services were called to SH2 in Katikati, between Jocelyn Street and Fairview Road, at about 12.40pm after reports a woman was trapped underneath the truck.

A woman has been hit by a car carrier in Katikati this lunchtime.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Ian Campion says the woman has been removed from underneath the car transporter and is being taken to hospital by St John Ambulance with serious injuries.

Diversions are in place at Jocelyn Street and Fairview Road with the Serious Crash Unit investigating the accident.

Ian says motorists can expect delays as the road will be closed for at least another hour.

Witnesses told a SunLive reporter at the scene that an elderly lady was crossing the road on a mobility scooter at the time of the accident.

The reporter was told the woman reached the pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road and appears to have attempted to cross the other lane when she was struck by the car transporter.

'The mobility scooter is lying on the road and she is still under the truck,” says the reporter.

But unfortunately a bypass isn't going to solve situations like this, unfortunately, the older generation get confused, and they look in the wrong direction and see that there is no oncoming traffic, and start to cross the road. Have seen this happen far too many times.

bypass

Not the answer, just look at other areas around NZ that had a bypass put in, massive decline in "traffic" to shops etc! Perhaps better refuge areas with flashing lights at mobility eye level and also to warn transports that someone is in that vicinity perhaps!!

Poor lady

I recently witnessed another close accident at one of Katikati's pedestrian refuges when a woman in a mobility scooter almost tipped over in the path of a truck because her scooter barely fitted through and the wheels ran up on the refuge curbing. The refuges are not wide enough. And the footpaths in front of some of the Main Street shops are cluttered with their displays making it very difficult and dangerous for elderly pedestrians and mobility scooters. We don't need cluttered footpaths.

yeah right
