Intimate acoustic gallery show

Two of New Zealand's finest singer-songwriters will perform an intimate one-off show at the Tauranga Art Gallery next week.

For more than 20 years Auckland duo Mark Laurent and Brenda Liddiard have graced stages both here and abroad and are well known for their lush sound and introspective lyrics.

The hardworking pair have together and separately recorded or contributed to about 30 albums and have written hundreds of songs and instrumentals.

You can't pigeonhole them as they love a range of styles which includes blues, reggae, acoustic rock, ambient, folk ballads and alt. country.

Next week's gig will treat locals to a high standard of musicianship and will feature the talents of both Mark and Brenda's on guitars, mandolin, ukulele, rowan lute and vocals.

With a background in blues and rock, Mark gives his performance a distinctive edge but also writes insightful songs which can touch audiences deeply.

While Brenda, whose recent album ‘Box of Memories' was a finalist in the 2013 Best Folk Album Tui Award, is hugely influenced by English and American acoustic music.

She also discovered her niche as a songwriter during the 70s and 80s and her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear activism in Australia.

If you love unplugged music with soulful harmonies, a touch of poetry and a dash of humour, then this is not a show to miss.

Mark Laurent and Brenda Liddiard play the Tauranga Art Gallery, corner of Wharf and Willow Streets, Tauranga, on Thursday, December 4, from 7pm.

Tickets cost $25 for general admission and $20 for students and friends of the gallery.

To book tickets call the Tauranga Art Gallery on: 07 578 7933.

First had the pleasure of being spellbound by this pairing a few years back at the Art Gallery - and I still benefit from the experience!
