A Katikati man has been taken to hospital after rolling the car he was driving into a ditch on State Highway 2, near Thompsons Track.

A northern fire communications spokesperson confirmed the crash happened near the Forta Leza Country Inn just after 2.30pm.

'There was one person trapped for a short time but they are now free.”

Katikati Volunteer Firefighter Brendan Gibbs is at the scene and says the man, believed to be in his 70s, has been taken by St John Ambulance to Tauranga Hospital.

'He's rolled the car two or three times into the ditch. He's gone off the road and the car has rolled. He's very lucky.”

Brendan says the man has injuries, but he doesn't believe they are life threatening.

He says emergency services are waiting for a tow truck to remove the car from the scene.

The road is open, but Brendan is urging people to slow down when driving past the crash scene.
