Petrol prices still dropping

Hewletts Road remains the best place to buy petrol in Tauranga city as Gull continues to ride down fuel prices.

Gull service station on Hewletts Road is selling at $1.81.9, with Waitomo selling 91 at $1.82.9.

Gull on Hewletts Road is the cheapest place in Tauranga to buy fuel at the moment
.

At 11th Avenue, Z is selling at $1.93, just below the current national average 91 octane price of $1.94 per litre, while Z on Hewletts Road is priced at $1.83.9.

Gull general manager Dave Bodger says further petrol price drops are in the offing following another drop in the ex-refinery prices for bulk fuel at the close of business in Singapore on Friday.

'Last week it sort of stabilised a bit but this is the lowest it's been,” says Dave today. 'It's just been falling since the middle of October.

'It's good news for motorists. When we see those numbers we will pass them straight on.”

The cheapest Gull petrol today is $1.75.9 a litre at Te Ngae in Rotorua.

A headline on Stuff this morning suggested that Gull was selling at $1.65 a litre, but that refers to the Gull's ‘ten cents off' deal last week.

Petrol prices have fallen 28c in 13 fairly small reductions since mid-October following a 40 per cent fall in international oil commodity prices.

Why does a 40% decrease in oil prices only lead to a 10% decrease in petrol prices? Should it not be even lower? We pay an exorbitant amount for petrol, $1.83 is not cheap. Its better than the $2.20 we saw earlier this year but still!

Gull self-serve is always a bit cheaper.

I haven't checked, but I expect Gull Merivale to be even cheaper.

the flyover been cheapest all week. Thought I was back in the 80's when I saw their prices. Gull on Hewletts road has got the bulk tank right behind them and The price still reflects Transport cost. How is it Gull in Rotorua can sell for that price and it has to be transported there. Prices should be the other way round to my way of thinking. Just goes to show there is still price gouging going on. Be nice if the Gubmint dropped some of the GST of the TAXES on the fuel would be cheaper still. Na no scruples there Gubmint quite happy to double dip. Taxpayers have deep pockets.

What is the truth?

We kept being told by the petrol companies that their margins are about 6 cents a litre yet Rotorua is consistently 6 cents a litre cheaper than Tauranga. How is this possible if the margins are so slim? Most of the Rotorua service stations have been operating for many years and you can't survive for long if you are selling fuel for 6 cents a litre below cost can you. What is the real story?

Oil companies like to play with peoples minds by only giving a little bit off at a time. its like dangling a carrot in front of the donkey. When the donkey reaches the end he gets the whole thing.

Unfair free advertising for Gull?

Why is it that sunlive in particular keep giving Gull so much free exposure? They have had a competitive advantage in that because they stock biofuel they would have recieved a subsidy from us the taxpayer. During which time they also broke the rules by avoiding tens of millions in duty by adding butane to their fuel. They play a shadow game of threatening legal action against people who make public posts about such things (I will look forward to recieveing another one for this post). Personally, I don't think they deserve the free exposure. Disclaimer - the above is my opinion only and the points made are not guaranteed to be accurate, please do your own research to confirm.

Commentator,maybe I can help...

Sunlive themselves do NOT give continual support, nor should they, to one servo supplier in particular, we should appreciate the fact that writers such as I can express reasonable opinion for a cause believed to be worthwhile. Without a carrier such as Sunlive to enable us to express such an opinion, we would all think like "The Commentator"..and I don't want to do that. As a matter of interest, my understanding is that 91 (at Gull) is indeed "91"..and the 98 octane is Bio...but maybe the likes of Mobil perhaps is also Bio?... FYI Commentator, sensible people always do there own research...

With the 40% drop at the refinieries, it is a 'have' not to get that passed onto the pump prices, regardless of who it is. Z, BP, Caltex, Mobil should all be competing for lower prices against each other. They ALL need to wake up & reduce the prices, instead of lining their own pockets. Since October, we've had 'zilch' reductions in fuel prices, compared to what we could have had. Bring back the good ole days.
