He normally doesn't do well in the swim leg of the Eve's Triathlon Series – but the currents were flowing the right way for Jamie Shields this time.

The 14-year-old crossed the finish line first in his Under 16 age group in the super sprint category this morning – his first win of the series.

'I don't usually come first in these events. I usually get second or third in these races.”

He finished the race in 34 minutes and 54 seconds.

His legs are a bit sore – but apart from that he's happy with his race.

'I normally do badly in the swim but I did good this time,” says Jamie. 'It was probably my best I've done in this triathlon.

'The currents were going the right way and on the way back from the bike there was a tail wind so I got lots of speed.”

Jamie competed in Race 1 of the series in December – the Eve's Surfbreaker Triathlon. He's not a fan of that one.

'I didn't do too well because it's on the surf side. We had to go over massive swells. I found it pretty difficult.”

So he should be happy race number three of the series – the Eve's Coronation Classic on March 1 – is at Pilot Bay again.

Before he begins training for that, Jamie says he'll be spending the rest of the day wakeboarding and on the sea biscuit.

The Eves-sponsored series attracts competitors throughout the Bay to compete in the sprint distance – 750m swim, 16km bike, 5km run and the super sprint distance of 375m swim, 8km bike and 2.5km run.

A duathlon consisting of 2-3km run, 16-20km bike and 5km run is also available.

Athletes compete in age groups including - Sprint U16; U19; 20-35; Over 35 Male and Female. Super Sprint 12 and Under; Open Male and Female; Teams single category only.

Jamie was followed by second place winner Mathew Lochhead with 35 minutes and 37 seconds and Blake Miller in third with 37 minutes and 1 second.

Papamoa's Aiden Dunster won the men's sprint individuals in 59 minutes and 42 seconds. He was followed by second place getter Adam McCarthy with 1 hour, 1 minute and 15 seconds and Ryan Young in third with 1 hour 1 minute and 23 seconds.

The women's sprint individuals was won by Matilda Lawrence in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 52 seconds. She was followed by Vicki Wade in second with 1 hour, 11 minutes and 18 seconds and Deidre Lack in third with 1 hour, 12 minutes and 41 seconds.
