Super secondary cricket

Some of the country's aspiring Blackcaps will bring an abundance of cricket to Tauranga for a week-long festival of top grade Secondary School Cricket.

The Super Eight Cricket tournament, hosted by Tauranga Boys' College, sees heavyweights of North Island secondary school cricket square off, with a number of recent Black Caps emerging from the annual event, including Daniel Flynn and Kane Williamson.

Beginning in 2002, Palmerston North were the first winners of the Cricket Super Eight silverware and annexed the title again in 2011.

Other multiple winners are Hamilton and Napier Boys, along with Tauranga Boys College, who secured back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Since the Super Eight was introduced, just two Schools have succeeded in winning the prestigious Gillette Cup and the Super Eight title in the same year.

In 2003 Hamilton Boys High School won the coveted double and repeated the feat in 2008, with hosts Tauranga Boys' College achieving the double in 2005.

A late withdrawal from Rotorua Boys High School means the hosts' second XI will join their first team in four days of competition.

Tauranga Boys' coach Mark Orchard says there are a number of new faces, but is confident the side can put up a good showing.

Brad Howard, Ben Donald and Harris Williams are all making their debuts, while Josiah Turner and Joshua Healy-Ormrod can still claim to be new to the team.

'The majority of the squad has had the invaluable experience of playing seven matches in Melbourne in December, when we competed in the World Schools Cricket Challenge,” says Mark.

'The Melbourne trip has given the side solid preparation to play against quality opposition in the tournament. The team will be looking to improve on the fourth place in last year's Super Eight”

Key players to the school's title charge are skipper and wicketkeeper Tom Renouf, batsman Jonty Grigson, all-rounder Josiah Turner and Gurwinder Singh with the ball.

The tournament is divided into two pools of play, with the Super Eight title being fought out on day four, between the winners of the two sections.

Pool A sees Tauranga Boys College squaring off against Hamilton, Napier and Gisborne Boys High Schools. Tauranga Boys second XI is a late call-up to Pool B and will face Palmerston North, Hastings and New Plymouth Boys Highs.

The Super Eight games will be played at Tauranga Boys College headquarters at Nicholson Field and on the three grass wickets at Ferguson Park in Matua. All matches will start at 10.30am each day.

Pool A: Hamilton Boys High School, Tauranga Boys College, Napier Boys High School, Gisborne Boys High School.
