Last minute enrolments welcomed

It's almost crunch time for the candidates in the Mount Maunagnui/Papamoa Ward by-election, but residents are being reminded that last minute enrolments are still being accepted.

With election day on February 17 looming, registrar of electors for the Tauranga and BOP electorates Lesley Christophers says there is still time to make your vote count.

'If you haven't enrolled in time to get your voting papers in the mail, you can still enrol and cast a special vote in the Mount Maunganui-Papmoa Ward by-election,” says Lesley.

'If you think you're enrolled but haven't received voting papers in the mail, then you need to update your enrolment details and cast a special vote as well.”

The by-election comes after Mount/Papamoa ward councillor and now NZ First MP Clayton Mitchell resigned on October 20 last year - the day he was sworn in as a member of parliament.

Five people are standing for the vacant Mount/Papamoa ward seat on Tauranga City Council.

They are Leanne Brown, Murray Guy, Matua Parkinson, Janet Peters and Clare Wilson.

Lesley asks the public to enrol or update their details now by calling: 0800 36 76 56, freetexting your name and address to 3676, from any PostShop or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website at: www.elections.org.nz

Anyone enrolling from now on will need to apply to their local electoral officer to cast a special vote.

People who enrolled between December 23, 2014 and polling day will need to contact the electoral officer Warwick Lampp on: 0508 666 002 or contact Tauranga City Council to get information on how to apply to cast a special vote.

Locals who are on the unpublished roll will also need to apply to cast a special vote in the by-election.

Postal voting opened yesterday and will close at midday on Tuesday, February 17. Enrolments for the by-election close at 4pm on Monday February 16.

Special voting facilities will be available during normal office hours at the Tauranga City Council office, 91 Willow Street, Tauranga from January 26 until noon on February 17.

Those who own property within a local council area, but who usually live outside this, can apply to go on the ratepayer roll. They will then be able to vote in the area where they pay rates, and the area where they live. To go on the ratepayer roll, you need to apply to the electoral officer for the local council area in which you own property but do not usually live. The electoral officer will send you out a form to complete, sign and return so they can check your eligibility. Ring Tauranga City Council, you can vote!
