UPDATED 9.10am: State Highway 2 has now reopened after a pedestrian was hit by a truck and killed near Ainsworth Road this morning.
An NZ Transport Agency spokesperson has confirmed that the road is open in both directions, but traffic remains heavily congested in the area.
State Highway 2 was closed at Te Puna after a pedestrian was hit by a truck.
A witness at the scene says members of the public were seen performing CPR on a person shortly after 7am, but those attempts were unsuccessful.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says police have been knocking on neighbours' doors in the area as they attempt to identify the man.

Reports are emerging this morning that a section of State Highway 2 at Te Puna has been closed after a pedestrian was hit by a truck.
Callers to SunLive have reported seeing someone lying on the road near the intersection of SH2 and Ainsworth Road.
A reporter at the scene says at least five police cars are attending as well as one ambulance.
Traffic is currently being diverted through Snodgrass Road, Armstong Road and Te Puna Road.

What is it with this stretch of highway? Why are people not taking more care? I live at Aongatete and am becoming more fearful of that road every day. I may be doing everything right but never any guarantees the other road users are. Very scary!

guessing only one lane? closing the whole road is just crazy
