An earthquake registering 4.9 on the Richter scale has hit near White Island this morning.
GeoNet reports the quake was strong and was about 105km north of the volcano.

The earthquake struck about 8.30am and was around 10km deep.
A weaker earthquake was recorded 5km south-west of White Island about 5am.
It had a focal depth of 9km and was 2.5 magnitude quake.
This is the second strong earthquake to hit the region this week, with a 4.7 quake striking on Monday. Read more here.
White Island's alert level remains at 1 and its aviation colour code is at green.
